I recall from teachings a long time ago that a hero is a person who struggles for a cause.
Even if their own life is forsaken…

I admire a man like him. I admire many an unsung hero too. But they all live on if we honor their memory and keep them in our hearts.

How awesome, not only for those who benefit from the altruism, but for the fighter and dreamer, to live for something bigger than yourself.

My father was on a plane that night, flying into Chicago returning from a business trip. The whole west side of the city was in flames. He could see it from the air. Blocks and blocks of buildings and cars on fire. He did not know what happened and thought perhaps the world was ending. Only after he landed did he learn what happened. To me, that tiny story says volumes about Martin Luther King, our city, and how the two met up. King said southerners needed ‘to come to Chicago to learn how to hate’ — and when he was killed, the city exploded. We are still working on it.
